Domestic benchmarks took a breather on Tuesday after a two-day record upward run. The indices were dragged by consumer, automobile and energy stocks. Headline index NSE Nifty closed at 20,906-level. Top gainers on the Nifty50 platform were HDFC Life, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Auto, SBI Life and Axis Bank while losers included Apollo Hospitals, Sun Pharma, Maruti, Coal India and Eicher Motors.
Stocks such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Maruti, Reliance Industries and UltraTech Cement were most active on NSE today, in terms of value. Tata Steel, SBI and PowerGrid were the other buzzing stocks on the platform, in terms of volume.
Shares of Equitas Small Finance Bank emerged as the top gainer in the NSE 500 index. The stock zoomed 9.95% on NSE today to settle at Rs 103.9.
Safari Industries (India) shares soared 8.75% to close at Rs 2,140.3. At this price, the company commanded a market capitalisation (m-cap) of Rs 5,090.4 crore.
Shares of Infibeam Avenues surged 7.14% to end at Rs 23.25 today. The company's market cap came at Rs 6,459.7 crore.
Shares of Sonata Software gained 7.05% today to settle at Rs 754.8. The company's market valuation stood at Rs 10,583.2 crore.
Shares of PI Industries fell sharply today. The stock dived 9.96% to close at Rs 3,484 on Tuesday.
Usha Martin shares slipped 6.48% to end the session at Rs 288.85. The company's m-cap stood at Rs 8,802.5 crore today.
Shares of Prestige Estates Projects were also among top losers in the NSE 500 pack today. The stock lost 6.39% to settle at Rs 1,102.2. The company's market cap was at Rs 44,183 crore.
"We can expect Nifty to hold the 20,700-20,800 zone in case profit-taking extends further. Focus should remain on identifying the sectors or themes that are playing out well and gradually accumulating those names on dips. Apart from banking and IT majors, we are seeing strong traction in themes like fertilizers, cement and railways just to name a few. So, align trades accordingly," said Ajit Mishra, SVP - Technical Research at Religare Broking.
