Asian Paints is among the largest paint companies in India. Asian Paints is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The story of Asian Paints dates back to 1942 when four friends - Champaklal H. Choksey, Chimanlal N. Choksi, Suryakant C. Dani and Arvind R. Vakil - came together to establish Asian Oil and Paint Company Pvt. Ltd. which would go on to become a leading paint company in India. The company’s first plant was located in Bhandup, Maharashtra which started commercial operations in 1958. 1965 was the year when the company was rebranded and got its now iconic name - Asian Paints (India) Pvt. Ltd. Within two years of the name change, Asian Paints emerged as the dominant paint company in India. Asian Paints went international in 1973 with the setting up of its first foreign subsidiary in Fiji. In 1987, Asian Paints partnered with Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) to form a joint venture firm - Pentasia Chemicals which by 1995 merged with Asian Paints. In the 1990s, Asian Paints collaborated with various entities to form joint venture firms. In 1990 alone Asian Paints formed five joint venture companies - Asian Paints (South Pacific), in Fiji, Asian Paints (Tonga), Asian Paints (Nepal), Asian Paints (S.I.) and Asian Paints (Vanuatu). In the early 2000s, Asian Paints was on an acquisition spree. It acquired the entire paints business of Australian firm Pacific Paints Company in 2000. In 2002, the iconic Berger brand became a part of Asian Paints after it acquired Berger International. 2003 saw two significant acquisitions by Asian Paints, Taubmans, a prominent paint company in Fiji and ICI India, a leading paint company in India. Following a number of acquisitions, Asian Paints (India) Pvt. Ltd was rechristened as just Asian Paints in 2005. Another major acquisition came in 2017 when Asian Paints acquired Causeway Paints, a prominent paint company in Sri Lanka. Asian Paints also acquired controlling stakes in Weatherseal Fenestration and Obgenix Software in 2022.
